Speak the Word of God
Those of us who desire to see God’s Kingdom come and His will be done must train ourselves to look beyond the physical realm, especially when interacting with people. We will be able to rightly speak God’s Word into our own lives and into the lives of others for their good if we learn to see beyond physical realities (2 Corinthians 5:7). This practice is essential, for only then can we speak life into our own lives and into the lives of others, regardless of visible circumstances.
When led by the Holy Spirit, declaring God’s Word over our lives and others’ is a powerful means of calling forth God’s will and establishing it in the name of Jesus Christ, by God’s grace (1 John 5:14). This reflects the truth of Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” The converse of this proverb is that we can also speak death into our lives and into the lives of others. Therefore, we must learn to speak only words of life—God’s Words—which are helpful for building up (Ephesians 4:29).
In 2 Corinthians 5:16, the Apostle Paul writes: “Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard Him thus no longer.” This means that we are to regard Christ not according to what we think, feel, or see, but according to what God’s Word says about Him. The same principle applies to all people—believers and unbelievers alike. For example, in Judges 6:12, the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and called him a “mighty man of valor,” even though Gideon saw himself as weak and insignificant. What ultimately matters is what God says about a person, and in Scripture we find what He says about those who are in Christ—His children, and also about those who are not.
To walk in the path of speaking God’s Word, three things are essential: being led by or keeping in step with the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:25), knowing God’s Word and allowing it to dwell richly within us (Colossians 3:16), and praying without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17), which maintains intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
I pray that God would enable the reader of this message to live in such a way that he or she brings life—the life of Christ—wherever they go, as they abide in Christ and in His Word, and speak God’s Word by His grace (2 Corinthians 2:14–15).
It is important to note that speaking God’s Word may sometimes involve declaring a truth that someone does not want to hear. Yet it remains the loving thing to do, for that truth will set the person free if he or she receives it, and it will build them up and give them life (Deuteronomy32:47). We are always to speak God’s Word—which is truth—in love (Ephesians 4:15), because it is life.
