How to Maintain Fellowship with the Holy Spirit?
Do not allow your mind to wander; instead, turn your attention to God. This can be done, for example, by engaging with God’s Word, speaking to Him through Scripture, or practicing praise, worship, and thanksgiving. The goal is for the believer to remain focused on God and His ways, as instructed in Philippians 4:8.
Practically, this may look like turning your thoughts toward God (see Colossians 3:1–2)—perhaps through praise or thanksgiving. However, you may find that your mind begins to drift toward other concerns or worldly matters. When this happens, you must intentionally redirect your thoughts back to God. You can do this by declaring relevant Scriptures, praising Him, or even bringing the concern that distracted you into conversation with God. This is a deliberate and ongoing practice. Since our minds naturally tend to drift, we are called to continually bring them back to God (Isaiah 26:3).
This requires discipline and perseverance—it is a spiritual battle. Yet, as believers, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to overcome (Romans 8:13). We must make a daily effort to resist distractions and train ourselves to consistently turn our minds back to God. Over time, this intentional focus will become second nature—like breathing.
A fitting verse for this spiritual practice is:
“Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!” (1 Chronicles 16:11).
Indeed, this is the path of seeking God’s continual presence, for in His presence we find everything we need.
For a follower of Christ, this lifestyle is what it means to walk in the Spirit—keeping the mind attuned to God and the spirit detached from the world and lifted toward Him (Colossians 3:1–4). In doing so, the believer is able, by God’s grace, to receive from heaven and bring heaven to earth (Matthew 6:33).
